چکیده

>20 ppm during July and August, summer diurnal cycle amplitudes increased, synoptic variability correlations improved and the gradient across the mid-continent region increased. These effects combined to reduce the squared differences between the model and high-precision tower CO2 concentrations by 20%. Synoptic transport of the large-scale N–S gradient caused significant day-to-day variability in concentration differences measured between the towers. This simulation study shows that carbon exchange between crops and the atmosphere significantly impacts regional CO2 fluxes and concentrations.

Using generalized cross-validation to select parameters in inversions for regional carbon fluxes

[1] Estimating CO2 fluxes from the pattern of atmospheric CO2 concentrations with atmospheric transport models is an ill-posed inverse problem, whose solution is stabilized using prior information. Weights assigned to prior information and to CO2 concentrations at different locations are quantified by parameters that are not well known, and differences in the choice of these parameters contribu...

Bridging the gap between atmospheric concentrations and local ecosystem measurements

[1] This paper demonstrates that atmospheric inversions of CO2 are a reliable tool for estimating regional fluxes. We compare results of an inversion over 18 days and a 300 300 km domain in southwest France against independent measurements of fluxes from aircraft and towers. The inversion used concentration measurements from 2 towers while the independent data included 27 aircraft transects and...

Inferring regional sources and sinks of atmospheric CO2 from GOSAT XCO2 data

We have examined the utility of retrieved column-averaged, dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) for quantifying monthly, regional flux estimates of CO2, using the GEOS-Chem four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation system. We focused on assessing the potential impact of biases in the GOSAT CO2 data on the regional flux estimate...

Estimates of Large-scale Fluxes in High Latitudes from Terrestrial Biosphere Models and an Inversion of Atmospheric Co2 Measurements

It is important to improve estimates of large-scale carbon fluxes over the boreal forest because the responses of this biome to global change may influence the dynamics of atmospheric carbon dioxide in ways that may influence the magnitude of climate change. Two methods currently being used to estimate these fluxes are process-based modeling by terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs), and atmospher...

Daily CO2 flux estimates over Europe from continuous atmospheric measurements: 1, inverse methodology

This paper presents an inverse method for inferring trace gas fluxes at high temporal (daily) and spatial (model grid) resolution from continuous atmospheric concentration measurements. The method is designed for regional applications and for use in intensive campaigns. We apply the method to a one month inversion of fluxes over Europe. We show that the information added by the measurements dep...
